The vision of ILS University of Ilorin is “to provide the required manpower for the sustenance of legislative practice, and the strategic transformation of the legislative capacity in Nigeria and Africa”.

RATIONALE:

The rationale behind the establishment of the Institute for Legislative Studies programme is to:

  1. deliver research-driven training modules leading to the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Legislative Studies based on a dynamic curriculum that grooms’ participants in hands-on and hands-off competencies in a conducive atmosphere that enhances learning and stimulates independent thinking among our students;
  2. provide a forum for the fluid exchange of research findings, ideas and observations for legislators, executives, civil society actors, academia and other stakeholders in the legislative arena towards ensuring adequate representation and accountable governance;
  3. provide a forum for a continuous interaction between the various branches of government, the civil society, academia and relevant actors through round-tables, Special-Lecture series and other public engagements; and
  4. to publish legislative studies journal

Aim and Objectives

  1. To provide capacity development services to democratic Institutions and governance in Nigeria.
  2. To conduct short-term training modules for members of the National and State Assemblies and their staff.
  3. To operate as a multi-disciplinary Institute capable of providing world class training, capacity building, research and policy analysis services for the legislature at the Federal, State and Local government levels.
  4. To provide the legislators and officials with institutionalized opportunities for problem-oriented studies and systematic training in the various disciplines of legislative institutions, processes and procedures.
  5. Improve capacity of Legislators to sustain and consolidate democratic governance through policy formulation.
  6. To improves the technical capacity of legislative staffs, committee secretaries and political aides to process appropriation bills and policy oversight of the Executive.
  7. To train on a continuous basis middle and senior level manpower for the National, State and Local government legislators; and
  8. To Assist the National Assembly and State Assemblies in their efforts to draft bills.
