Introduction

Election and Political Party Management involve the understanding of the fundamental elements, dynamics and challenges of democratic elections and party politics towards democratic development. The Election and Political Party Management Programme of the University of Ilorin is unique because it provides a blend of theoretical and practical exposure to the intricacies of Election and Political Party Management in Nigeria.

Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is hinged on the indispensability of training and constant interaction of stakeholders in the overall project of democratic consolidation with a conviction that the Election and Political Party Management occupies a strategic role between the citizens and the state which the academia must constantly engage with.

Aim and Objectives

Aim

The Master of Election and Political Party Management degree aims at developing thinkers and practitioners with adequate theoretical and practical knowledge in all facets of legislative operations, democratic governance, civil society engagement and advocacy.

Objectives

Upon completion of the programme, graduates would have:

  1. gained sufficient knowledge and understanding of democratic elections and party politics.
  2. acquired adequate skills for critical analysis and evaluation of election matters.
  3. acquired the capacity to anticipate, manage and resolve inter or intra party conflicts.
  4. understand and appreciate issues and trends in elections and party politics.

Admission Requirements

a. A good honours degree not below Third Class Division (Law and Political Science) and any discipline other than Law and Political Science obtained from any recognized University

b. Five (5) O-Level Credits including English Language and Mathematics

c. Candidates with a PGD in Elections and Party Politics at credit level pass (i.e. 2.5 or 50% and above)

Duration of the Programme

The programme shall be a minimum of 12 months for full-time studentship and 24 months for part-time studentship.

LEG 816 Distinguished Personality Lecture 1 Credit

Seasoned legislators (serving or former)/technocrats/ shall be invited to deliver Distinguished Personality Lectures on specific theme(s) based on practical field experience in legislative practice. The lecture shall be interactive, and students would be required to write analytical report on the basis of the cases cited in the lecture. It is also an opportunity for students and faculty to interact with actors whose experience have shaped occurrences in the polity in relations to legislative activities. 45h (P); C
