History

The Institute for Legislative Studies was formally established by the University of Ilorin management in 2023 under the current Vice Chancellor, Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole SAN. The maiden Director of the institute is Professor Ibrahim Imam of the Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin and the Deputy Director. The Institute has it permanent office building located at Onikanga Area, GRA, Ilorin, Kwara State Nigeria. The Institute for Legislative Studies (ILS), University of Ilorin, Nigeria is a research and academic Unit and also a capacity building Centre for all stakeholders in legislative functions, particularly the legislators both federal, state and local government levels. The Institute is focused on supporting the sustenance of the dynamics and effective legislature in Nigeria in line with the university of Ilorin vision and mission. The Institute has the following departments, Director’s Office, Deputy Director and Deputy Office, Library and ICT Unit, Legislative Studies and Drafting Unit, Constitutional Law and Development Unit, Election and Political Party Management Unit, Parliamentary Administration Unit.

ILS is a centre of excellence for research and publication on democratic governance as well as a centre for continuing education on democracy and legislation. Among other functions, the Institute conducts short-term courses for all categories of legislative officers and their support staff with a view to expanding their overall knowledge and performance in different sections of legislative services.

Members of the ILS Standing Committee

ILS commenced operation with a standing steering committee. The members of the committee were made up of the action plan committee constituted by University management to ensure effective commencement and running of the Institute. They were professional staff drawn from Faculty of Law, Department of Political Science and Department of sociology whose role were to advance mission and vision of the University and the Institute as well as the ILS understandings of the equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging at the University of Ilorin.

The ILS standing steering committee was the Director’s advisory committee, they were professionals who were committed to the actualization of ILS mission and vision vides implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the institute key actions. The staff members include:
